A little about me: I'm Amelia. Both my hair and my heart wish they lived in a perpetual 80s teen movie. I'm a self proclaimed product junkie and advocate of all things curl, but I didn't start out that way. A good decade of my life was spent in kinky ponytails, untrimmed tresses, or hair still smoking from my flat iron. But here's the thing when you grow up with total hair ignorance and 24/7 humidity: You're fighting a losing battle.

And I wasn't the only one.

I soon learned that other girls were in the same predicament as me. I've spent many a conversation debating the best ways to combat frizz, encourage curl, or just plain make it work. I remember asking a friend, "I love your hair, what do you use?" She said, ever so casually, a combination of 7 products. Yup, 7. This is no small task. So many of us put insane amounts of time, effort, and money into our hair. Look at all the pinterest how tos, YouTube tutorials, or the infinite amounts of hair gadgets on the market. It only makes sense to write it all down and document the journey. I don't have endless days of flawless hair (In fact I grade my hair on something I like to call the "Hermione Scale," but I'll explain that later) or never straighten my hair. I just try to go with it and have some fun along the way.

It feels a little strange dedicating a blog to all things beauty when I'm still learning all this stuff. On good days I get jealous sighs and "Is that natural?" On my bad days I pass for the before picture in a makeover segment and get not-so-subtle sale pitches for hair straighteners. But if I wanted reliable, normal hair I'd still be throwing it back in ponytails everyday. I'll take interesting over boring any day of the week. To me we're all in this together: Curls on a mission.

As long as I can remember, my hair and I have been frenemies. And not just the spreading rumors, trip you in the hall kind. I’m talking life-ruining, boyfriend-stealing, Blair-and-Serena frenemies. It’s a rough relationship: on good days my hair makes me feel gorgeous and fun. On bad days I threaten to cut it all of Natalie Portman style. Luckily, my common sense won out (I don’t have Natalie’s bone structure) and so my hair is here to stay. Which is why I’m trying to make this broken relationship work.

I will admit though, my hair-lationship (yes, I just made that up) has turned abusive at times. I have spent the better part of my life dying, straightening, and generally heat damaging the crap out of my hair. This is not something I am proud of, but it is something I am working on. Which is why since I’ve been abroad in Thailand for the past three months, I have not been using heat of any kind of my hair. Yes, read that again. NONE. No blow drying, straightening, touch up curling, nothing! Which is a huge for me.

But I’m not going to lie, it’s been rough. I haven’t worn my hair truly and naturally curly since middle school, so it’s been sort of an ongoing science experiment to see what works. Which really doesn't bode all that well, considering I barely passed high school Chemisty. But periodic table aside, I feel like I have tried SO MANY PRODUCTS. Mousse? Been there. Gel? Don't even get me started. Combine both and add Tabasco? Okay, maybe not, but you never know..  And I'm still trying! Basically I’m on a journey, a quest would you have it, that one that will hopefully lead me down the path to Great Hair.  And I hope that by sharing my experiences, I can help you find your Great Hair too. It’s different for everyone, but I believe! Curls on a Mission!
